Campin' Under the Stars: Fresh from the Factory - CampInn 550 Walk-Around
What a whirlwind adventure! After years of dreaming about the perfect compact camper for my astrophotography getaways, I finally made the trek to Necedah, Wisconsin—the home of CampInn Trailers—to pick up my custom 550 teardrop. Towing it back to Whitesboro, NY, with my 2023 Tesla Model Y was a smooth 1,000+ mile journey, proving the electric combo is a match made in eco-friendly heaven. The Tesla’s torque handled the hills effortlessly, and regen braking kept things efficient.
Oh, and I should mention: I’ve christened her “Haley,” after the famous Halley’s Comet—fitting for a rig that’ll be chasing stars across the night sky!
Now that I’m home and unpacked, I couldn’t resist firing up the camera for a detailed walk-around video. This little beauty is packed with thoughtful features that make it ideal for solo camping trips—especially those late-night stargazing sessions. Compact on the outside (easy to tow and store), but surprisingly spacious and functional inside. Let’s dive in!
The Walk-Around Highlights
In the video below, I cover all the essentials:
-
Exterior and Build: Lightweight aluminum construction, aerodynamic shape for better mileage, and sturdy axles ready for off-pavement paths. The galley kitchen at the rear is a game-changer—fridge, sink, and stove at your fingertips without stepping inside.
-
Water System: Efficient and simple—fresh water tank with an electric pump, easy-fill port, and a gray water drain. Perfect for quick cleanups after a dusty day at the campsite or rinsing astro gear.
-
Storage Compartments: Ample spots for all your camping necessities. Under-bed storage for bulkier items like telescopes (hello, Red Cat 71!), side compartments for tools and cables, and roof rack options for extras. No more Tetris in the Tesla trunk!
-
Internal Cabinets and Layout: Cozy sleeping quarters with a queen-size bed, overhead cabinets for clothes and personal items, and clever nooks for books or snacks. LED lighting throughout, fans for ventilation, and power outlets galore (solar-ready for off-grid astro marathons). It’s like a tiny home on wheels—minimalist yet comfortable.
Why the CampInn 550?
As a retired software engineer with a passion for astrophotography, I needed something portable, durable, and low-maintenance. This teardrop fits the bill: quick setup (under 5 minutes), no canvas to fuss with, and enough space to store my scopes without cramping. Towing with the Tesla keeps my carbon footprint light, and the whole setup screams “adventure-ready.” First real test coming soon—stay tuned for trip reports!
If you’re in the market for a teardrop, CampInn’s craftsmanship is top-notch. Questions about the pickup process or Tesla towing? Drop ’em in the comments—I’d love to chat.
